One of the most common questions asked is 'how old does my child need to be to start learning?' This is a loaded question.
Many families would like their little people to learn singing or acting because they have recognised a joy in performing. Sadly, mimicking their favourite pop star or actor is not always healthy for the young voice. At Libretto School of the Arts, we look to foster this joy of performing through programs that provide safe practices suitable for developing performers.
Alyssa has crafted programs that cover ear training, effective speaking, teamwork, leadership skills, movement and coordination so that your child can enjoy singing, acting and dancing long into the future. Students participate in a series of drama games, effective speaking practices, music activities or safe vocal/singing practices as a means of developing student confidence.

Having a goal post is critical to improvement. Libretto School of the Arts offers a range of performance opportunities with local groups including the Townsville Music Centre, Amadeus Singers, Townsville Basketball, Cotters Markets and many more.
Alyssa is an active member of the Townsville music theatre scene and can prepare adults and teens for auditions in upcoming shows, cabarets or concerts for Townsville Choral Society or North Queensland Opera and Music Theatre.
Like most qualifications singing exams do incur additional costs. There are two singing exam schools that currently serve Australia - AMEB and Trinity College of London.
Ask about upcoming shows, events or singing exams. For more information regarding costs for one off lessons or short-courses contact Alyssa directly.
As a Senior Secondary Drama Teacher for over 20 years, Alyssa has a broad knowledge of the QCAA Senior Drama Curriculum. Libretto Studios is proud to offer tailored Professional Development workshops to Drama teachers in the Townsville District and surrounding regions. Consultation can focus on general scope and sequence planning, resource gathering, or even gaining a better understanding of styles and conventions to maximise your teaching time; alternately Alyssa can tailor a detailed workshop specific to your school, your units and your texts, complete with resources and activities to suit your learners.

Q. Do I have to have a knowledge of music to learn singing OR drama?
A. No. Anyone with a passion for singing or acting can join the fun.
Q. How old must my child be to start?
A. Developing voices can be damaged if starting too young. My rule is no younger than 8 years of age for individual lessons. At this young age, students can expect to learn foundation techniques with a view to setting up good singing habits. If you are seeking tuition in the 4-7 year-old bracket, join our Aria class or Novelty class to work with like-minded students. This is a cost effective and fun way of learning for this younger age group.
Q. Do I have to do exams?
A. No. Exams are optional. They come at a cost and require time and commitment to practice.
Q. What if I don't want to learn classical singing?
A. No. Classical is just one of the styles that can be taught. It does provide the best techniques for protecting the young and developing voice, so there may be some correlation with warm up exercises as students learn healthy singing habits. Other styles studied include Contemporary, Music Theatre, Jazz, Country and Song-Writing.
Q. Can you teach me to sing like Billie Eilish?
A. The short answer is no. Everyone has a unique voice and learning how to use your own voice in a healthy way may mean that you don't sound like your favourite pop singer or comedian.
Q. What happens if I am sick and miss a lesson?
A. Life happens. There will inevitably be a day when either a student or a teacher is feeling unwell. If this is the case, please do not attend your lesson. Singing or reciting text while sick can cause damage and is generally not a healthy exercise. Notify your teacher as soon as possible and your teacher will endeavour to find catch you up on information missed.
